Wall Art Frame Colors Compared: Oak, Natural, Black, White, Espresso and Gold

Framed vintage floral print with a white mat in a wood frame

Picking a frame can feel harder than picking the art. The right finish makes a print look finished and intentional, and the wrong one fights your furniture. Here is a plain-language guide to every frame finish we offer, what each one looks like in a room, and how to choose.

Quick answer

  • Warm, relaxed, natural rooms: Oak or Natural
  • Modern, high contrast: Black
  • Bright, airy, minimal: White
  • Moody, traditional, rich wood tones: Espresso
  • Soft glam or classic: Gold
  • Dramatic, antique, gallery style: Vintage Gold or Vintage Black

Oak

Oak is a real wood frame with visible grain, so every frame has a little natural variation in color. It pairs well with landscapes, botanicals and neutral palettes, and it blends with wood floors and furniture instead of competing with them. If you are building a gallery wall, hang your oak frames together so the grain variation reads as intentional.

Natural

Natural is a lighter, softer wood tone. It suits Scandinavian, coastal and minimalist spaces and keeps the focus on the art. On white or very light walls, natural gives you warmth without weight.

Black

Black frames give the sharpest edge and the most contrast. They work in almost any room and are the easiest choice for a gallery wall with mixed art. On a pale wall, black makes a print feel graphic and crisp.

White

White frames blend into light walls and make a piece feel bright and airy. They are a good choice for nurseries, bathrooms and small rooms where you want to avoid visual heaviness.

Espresso

Espresso is a deep, dark brown. It suits traditional and moody rooms, libraries and dining rooms, and it goes especially well with vintage landscapes and still life paintings with rich, muted colors.

Gold

Our Gold finish is a soft satin, not a gloss and not totally matte. It reads muted rather than bright, which keeps it classic instead of flashy. A good fit for traditional spaces, entryways and bedrooms.

Vintage Gold and Vintage Black

These are our statement frames, with an antique look. Choose them when you want gallery drama, and keep the room around them simple. Vintage finishes are available on mounted canvas and framed paper, but not on float frame canvas.

How to choose in three steps

  1. Look at the wood tones already in the room, like floors and tables. Match warm to warm, or choose black for contrast.
  2. Look at the art. Soft, muted paintings suit wood tones and gold. Bold, graphic art suits black or white.
  3. If you are not sure, order a 5x7 unframed paper print first. Colors can read differently on a screen than in your room, and a small piece is the easiest way to check. The cost is credited back on a later order of $100 or more.

All of our frames are real wood. Framed paper prints include acrylic glazing. Free shipping is included, and every piece is made to order.

Frame color FAQ

Are the frames real wood?

Yes, all of our frames are real wood.

Do the frames come with glass?

Framed paper prints use acrylic glazing, not glass. Canvas pieces have no glazing at all, so they are a good choice for rooms with a lot of glare.

Can I buy a frame by itself?

No, frames are not sold separately.

What if the color looks different than the photo?

Screens and lighting vary. A 5x7 is the easiest way to check before a larger order.
